Abstract:This article considers the fact that Poland's government has put up its second-biggest oil refiner, Rafineria Gdanska, up for sale. The author states that Poland's government plans to sell a majority stake to a strategic investor and it needs to be done as soon as possible because Gdanska is simply to small to survive alone. The author states that a loose alliance is being brewed between PKN (Poland's flagship refinery) and its Hungarian counterpart, Mol, as part of the ongoing regional consolidation of the oil industry. That would allow the Hungarians to buy Gdanska and gain a foothold in Poland. It could scupper one of the supposed intentions of this sale: breaking PKN's unhealthy dominance of the Polish fuel market.
