Abstract: | Spain's entry into the European Community in 1986 required it to adjust its legislation to the Community Law over a transitional period. This requirement meant that the country had to dismantle its state oil monopoly. This has enormous implications for the Spanish oil industry. To protect the industry over a transitional period, the former legal monopoly was first replaced by a de facto monopoly. Recently the disintegration of this system goes parallel with the development of a strong, partly privatized state oil company. In July 1990 the government price-fixing system for oil products has been deregulated, and finally in 1992, all restrictions on the trade of oil products have to be removed. |
