| Abstract: | The function of a jig and/or fixture or fixturing system is to hold a workpiece firmly in position during a manufacturing process. Fixture design is basically a subsequent activity of process planning. This paper discusses the principles and requirements of fixturing, the fixtures currently in use , and reviews some prototypes of automated fixturing systems in the literature. A taxonomy of fixture design research is also presented as well as a generic working model of the fixture planning and design process using the IDEF technique. The paper concludes with a summary of research opportunities. |
