Abstract:There are three stages in trust building. The first is to establish the basis on which people and their companies are prepared to work together. This is often a matter of assessing the risks and benefits for each party. The second is to start to develop trust through a positive experience of working together that strengthens mutual understanding between the partners or team members. The third stage generally comes out of an extended period of fruitful collaboration, when the people involved come genuinely to like each other and establish a personal bond. In traditional societies this bond, often based on kinship, provides the starting point for collaboration, but this is less likely in global business. Guidelines for practice are identified that cultivate these foundations for trust.
