Abstract:Home shopping is a term, covering the activities of the established mail order companies, as well as those of high street retailers and of companies set up specifically to offer home shopping. The great majority of goods ordered in the home and delivered to it are chosen from paper catalogues. Over 70% of orders are taken over the telephone rather then by post, with strong trend towards payments by plastic card. There is a general recognition that home shopping is waiting for the technologies to appear in the home, in sufficient volumes. It is reported that until this happens, there is little to be gained from designing systems which go beyond the basics: voice telephone, television, plastic payment cards and catalogues.
