Abstract:The market for lighters and smokers' requisites was worth 175 million pounds in 1994. Sales of lighters (mainly cheap disposable lighters) are increasing at the expense of matches. This has been caused by the abolition of the 50p tax on lighters on January 1, 1993, which has effectively halved the price of cheap disposable lighters. This move has also served to kill the trade in smuggled lighters. Lighters are now very cheap, from 30p or so, and retailers sell them as alternatives to matches. The market for cicarette papers is increasing: smuggled hand rolling tobacco and personal imports more than make up for any decline in consumption of legally-retailed hand rolling tobacco.
