Abstract:This article investigates theoretically the social function of trust, the preconditions of the production of the trust and the possibility of reconstructing power as a mechanism similar to trust, and researches how industry associations and legal regulations influence the quality of inter-firm relations, using a comparative perspective (German and Britain). It seems that trust is produced more reliably when institutions are strong and business relations are embedded into their institutional environment. When the institutional framework is weak, power functions more as an alternative mode of co-ordinating social interaction and expectations, but in stable and comprehensive institutional environment it fosters the production of trust.
