Abstract:Tolerance buildup in part processing arises when a part is manufactured through a sequence of operations. Each operation has a given tolerance, and the problem is to determine the combined effect of these tolerances on the critical dimensions. To manufacture a given part there usually exists more than one sequence of operations. Tolerance buildup in the critical dimensions depends not only on the operational tolerances, but also on the order in which these operations are performed. This article proposes an objective criterion for comparing alternative manufacturing sequences.
