Abstract:Based on evidence from a sample of 66 countries and information on mergers and acquisitions from the Brazilian competition authority, this note attempts to show three points: (i) there appears to be no evidence that the development of competition policy deters foreign direct investment inflows; (ii) Brazil's experience suggests that mergers and acquisitions involving foreign capital merit scrutiny by the competition agency because of their potential effects on competition; (iii) there is a significant level of denationalization of Brazilian firms reflected in the sample chosen, but the phenomenon does not not seem to present specific competition problems that would justify a differential treatment, such as a possible change in the notification requirements for foreign firms.
