Abstract:In the paper, the relationship btw. capital, risk and efficiency for a large sample of European banks from 1992 to 2000 is analyzed. In contrast to the established U.S. evidence, no positive relationship btw. inefficiency and bank risk-taking is found. Inefficient European banks seem to hold more capital and take on less risk. Positive relationship is found btw. risk on the level of capital (and liquidity), possibly indicating regulators' preference for capital. In addition, evidence is also found that the financial strength of the corporate sector has a positive influence in reducing bank risk-taking and capital levels etc.
