Abstract: | The interaction is examined in the absence of property rights when agents face a trade-off between productive and coercive activities. First, the possibility of cooperation in a static setting, its characteristics, and the conditions under which it prevails are explored. Second, an important source of asymetric power distribution is identified. Conflict is not necessary outcome of one-time interaction, an d cooperation is consistent with domination of one agent over another. An agent's power is inversively related to an agent's resources when they are valued according to marginal productivity theory. Some implications of the evolution of property rights are drawn. |
