Abstract: | Religion is on the rise across the world. Talk of a Christian - Muslim confrontation to replace the Cold War ideological cleavage is widespread. Misperceptions among both Muslims and Christians reinforce confrontational rhetoric. Turkey, as the model of a European state which combines modern capitalism and secular democracy with a moderate brand of Islam, could find a credible role for itself as abridge between the two religions and cultures. Only secular, independent and strong democracies can survive the test of Muslim fundamentalism. |
