Abstract:This study investigates the role that central banks have played in economic development. In the developed economies of the West, the central banks functions as the institution that conducts monetary policy as well as the regulator of the financial institutions-mainly commercial banks and thrifts. However, the central banks of the developing countries do not have such luxury. Rather, they act as regulators of commercial banks and other specialized banks, functions as institution that conducts monetary policy as well as fiscal policies.
