Abstract:Probably the single most formidable hurdle facing Eastern Europe and other former socialist economies in their transition to capitalism is privatization. Since the collapse of communism in these countries carrying out privatization has proved harder than expected. As the country with the longest history of comprehensive economic reform during the socialist period, Hungary provides an interesting case study of the evolution of the private sector in Central and Eastern Europe from the communist period to the present.
