Abstract:This paper develops a symbolic defence of group position model to explain opposition to the entries of EU candidate states and to examine how these explanaions differ for post-Communist EU members. Results of hierarchical multinomial logistic models of Eurobarometer data from the EU-25 suggest that symbolic nature of enlargement shapes the effects of interests and threat. Attitudes toward the entry of Turkey into EU seem to be less shaped by material interests than attitudes toward other candidates' entries, and they seem to be a function of the perceived threat it poses to the group position and identity of Europeans.
