Abstract:The article aims to contribute to the discussion about Turkey's suitability to the European Union as what comes to cultural differences between Turkey and EU. Using World and European Values Survey data, the article investigates whether Turkish people share the same liberal-democratic values as EU citizens. The results of the survey reveal that democracy is supported in Turkey to the same extent as in EU. However, Turkish people support more religious and authoritarian rule, whereas EU citizens support the rule of law. In addition, the tolerance of minorities is lower in Turkey than in EU member countries. The differences in these values are explained by economic development of the two regions.
