Abstract:The European Council adopted the "social charter" /Community Charter of the Fundamental Social Rights of Workers/ in December 1989. It became the focus of a major political debate in the UK, as the government is opposed to the charter because it might jeopardise the deregulatory approach to the labour market. The article looks at issues like the participation issue and the company statute. It argues that despite the inevitable compromises EC law will have a very big influence on British industrial relations.
