Abstract:Alliances within European retailing can be seen as either compact and tight alliances, with highly developed interactions amongst alliance partners, or as a much looser concept of collaborative activity amongst retailers. This paper accepts the broad definition of retail alliances that Dawson and Shaw (1992b) propose, and investigates whether this definition is helpful to the study of European retail alliance activity.
