Abstract:The re-opening in 1992 of Shanghai's financial services sector, after a nearly 50-year hiatus, is one of the most significant developments for the PRC since China launched the Special Economic Zones in 1979. The city as a whole, too, is undergoing a revival, spearheaded in large part by the growing number of former Shanghai leaders who have joined the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party. Members of the "Shanghai mafia" within China's highest Party ranks include President Jiang Zemin, Executive Vice Premier Zhu Rongji etc.
