Abstract:This article seeks to explain why it is that integrated supply chain management (ISCM) approaches may often fail to be implemented as successfully as many managers, and their advisors, had anticipated. This failure of implementation is first explained theoretically by the refinement of the concept of power regimes. The refinement is based on the development of the concept of power subregimes. Then, based on a case example drawn from the motor insurance claims supply chain, this article demonstrates how integrated approaches to supply chain management can be subverted by the power resources residing in sub-regimes of power. The discussion so far has tended to depict supply chains as relatively integrated structures.
