Abstract:In this article, the concept of Eurasianism (hereafter as: E-ism) in relation to Russia's East Asian policy from Yeltsin to Putin is examined. It is argued that there are three main interpretations of Russia's Eurasianist identity in the foreign policy discourse as to East Asia: Pragmatic E-ism, Neo-E-ism, and Intercivilisational E-ism. Each interpretation emphasises a different aspect of E-ism with different policy implications, however, sharing an instrumentalist nature.
