Abstract:Strategic contingencies theory was tested in 20 ambulatory care clinic settings. Physician, nurse, and administrator power and roles were examined. It was found that the role associated with physicians, rather than strategic behaviors, was the best predictor of power acquisition. The application of strategic contingencies theory was most appropriate for nurses.
