Abstract:Management appraisal systems serve to place rationality and static sense upon what are unstable and entropic forces. However, institutionalized procedures for management appraisal are necessary and appropriate devices which contribute to and are supported by rational-legal ideologies of organization. Sources of perceived deficiency of appraisal systems derive from inconsistencies between the complexity in a dynamic organization and the objectives and procedures of the appraisal system by means of which its members' performance is recorded. Meanwhile, management appraisal systems do not constrain the prerogatives of members of dominant power groups to define reality and manage affairs in their own interests.
