Abstract:Unlike earlier sales of state industries in the United Kingdom, the government's plans to sell electricity companies to private companies are already in disarray. The Energy Secretary's, John Wakeham's attempts to offload the power generating plant PowerGen on Lord Hanson last summer illustrates the extent of the mess. The government has invited the intervention of the EC environment commissioner, and cast fresh doubts over the real cost of cleaning up coal-fired generating plants. The government revealed that there are no guarantees of supply, just at the time when oil prices began to spiral alarmingly, due to the Gulf crisis.
