Abstract:This article deals with two basic strategies (hereafter as: strs.) of Russian companies, that is, isolation from, and close cooperation with the state. It is shown that under the conditions of a weak state the strs. lead either to an expansion of the shadow economy or to 'state capture'. A wide range of possible strs. of interaction with the state are provided for the business by high degree of economy's openness and the remaining heterogeneity of political actors. It is explored how the strs. are becoming more formal and public compared to the 1990s.
