Abstract:The UK market for footwear is considered over the period 1987 - 1991 with prospects for the next five years. Sales for footwear in 1991 were badly affected by the economic recession. The total market was valued at GBP 3.56 million in 1991, an increase of only 0.4 percent on its 1990 level. In volume terms, the market decreased by 5 percent to 1990, from 275.7 to 261.8 million pairs. The men's shoes sector has also declined. Footwear represents 17 percent of total spending on clothing. The majority of footwear, around 75 percent in volume terms, sold in the UK is imported, mostly from Italy. Exports of footwear are only one quarter level of imports.
