Abstract: | The first section of the article provides a brief history of DDT and identifies a few of its most salient characteristics. The second section sketches the nature of the recent dispute. The third section is conceptual, clarifying and illustrating key concepts. The fourth section relies upon the work of John D. Graham and Jonathan B. Wiener in their Risk vs. Risk: Tradeoffs in Protecting Health and the Environment. As a part of their Risk Trade- off Analysis they develop a two-by-two matrix for understanding risk trade-offs, and identify important factors to consider in making the trade-offs and balancing risks. In the process, the article will defend the compromise reached allowing DDT for limited public health purposes in third world countries. |
