Abstract:In an attempt to allow for additional flexibility in measurement of income responses, this paper proposes a quadratic extension of a 'Variant' model of Coondoo and Majumder (1987). The author examines empirical performances of the quadratic system and some other models using Indian consumer expenditure data. The author concludes that (1) the quadratic models are generally superior to their log-linear counterparts and (2) the Quadratic extension of Almost Ideal Demand System (QAIDS) performs better than Qvariant in terms of statistical criteria.
