Abstract:Over the twenty years since reform and opening up, the income level of Shanghai residents has been raised continuously, major adjustment made in structure of income and great changes have taken place in the consumption level, structure and quality. The results of assessment of twelve indicators for evaluating the process of people's being fairly "well-off" comprehensively, which are set by the State Statistical Bureau by drawing for reference the international standards, show that by 1996, Shanghai's comprehensive scores measuring the degree of realizing the goal of being fairly "well-off" reached 92.4 points, which indicates that the overall living standard of Shanghai residents has reached the standard of being fairly "well-off" ahead of time.
