Abstract:This paper discusses regulation that nowadays surrounds us everywhere we turn. It questions the extraordinary pervasiveness of government regulation. Is it a good idea? The growth of regulation is positively correlated with the growth of income, which seems to indicate that regulation is beneficial. Or have the USA and Western Europe grown despite it? Key theories of economic regulation are analysed, and an analytical framework is presented.
