Abstract:Unemployment in Hungary has been rising steadily since 1986, when registration began, and has accelerated rapidly since mid-1989. An overview of the development and changing nature of the phenomenon is presented, including its distribution by age, sex, skill level, etc. Analysing the Government's efforts to develop an effective employment strategy and the reasons for its inadequacy so far, the conclusion is drawn that in the present Hungarian labour market even a well-conceived and efficiently administared employment policy stands little chance of success because the roots of the problem go so deep in the economy.
