Abstract:In recent years US policy makers have not viewed a shorter working week as an effective tool for lowering unemployment and the labour movement has been relatively silent in the issue. Given the minimal governmental regulations regarding working time patterns, the article shows how working time has been regulated through collective bargaining agreements in the 1980s. It also provides data on the duration, nature and structure of working time in the USA.
