Abstract: | The role of economic forces in the fertility in Western Europe is studied. It is found that both the regression results and the historical simulations strongly support economic growth as a cause of fertility change in Western Europe. The non-monotonic effect of per capita incomes on birth rates is consistent with the contemporary microeconomic theory of fertility, particularly with respect to a trade-off between child quantity and child quality. The simulation results clearly suggest that forces other than growth in per capita income accounted for much of the observed drop in fertility. |
