| Abstract: | Challenging an overdependence on prudential reasoning for ethical behaviour in business, it is argued that codes of honour are strongly based on self-esteem and the respect of peers and wider society. Appeals to prudence do not form a basis for any kind of genuinely ethical business code. The author draws on the work of Bernard Mandeville and the biographies of business leaders to illustrate the importance of self-esteem to any market morality. |
