| Abstract: | Despite the increasingly popular perception that Japan is opening up to foreign investors, managers contemplating an investment may still face major institutional hurdles. The present position can be understood only from a historical perspective, which reveals a controlled and responsive "liberalisation" over the past 25 years. Throughout, Japan has been aware of the advantages and disadvantages and transnational investors might bring, but clearly identified Japanese objectives have always been paramount. |
