Abstract:Man not only communicates through language but also interprets signs taken from natural and cultural environment (homo interpres). The author refutes objections against this thesis, namely that interpretation is only the privilage of the few, that text and not the world are interpreted, that world is identified not interpreted and that modern world is dumb. Five categories of signs are established: signal, foretoking, revelation, emblema and hieroglyph.
