Abstract:To be successful, top executives must be vigilant in their monitoring of environmental conditions to determine whether the current fit is appropriate or whether strategic interventions are necessary. When it becomes apparent that the team's cognitions and strategic decision making behaviour do not fit the environmental context, a crisis leading top executive replacement occurs. As a result, the replacement of top executives provides an important mechanism for the organization to overcome inertia and to adapt strategically to changing contexts.
