Abstract:How do Japanese top managers provide successful leadership to their companies? It is not unusual to hear Western top managers comment that their Japanese opposite number seems poorly informed about a project they are working on together. The task of progressing the project seems to lie with one or more middle managers, to whom the senior man is constantly turning for comment. This kind of view leads to the common image of the self-effacing Japanese senior executive who has plenty of time to participate in a whole range of industry and MITI-inspired committees.
