Abstract:Shop stewards are an essential part of union government. However, the role of the shop steward in Irish industrial relations has received little attention - with the notable exception of Murphy and Wallace and O'Shea. As a result, little is known about union activism in the Irish context. Most of the theoretical and empirical research into union activism can be grouped broadly into two distinct approaches. The first approach focuses on psychological needs, personal characteristics and attitudes of individuals to explain the differences generally between office holders and non office holders.
