Abstract: | Experts often solve problems by categorizing them as specific problem types. In this study managers were asked to define problems in actual organizational situations. Analysis of their problem definitions indicated that they rarely used the problem categories from previous research. However, they did apply an extensive set of categories in thinking about issues. The author describes the study and presents its results. He integrates current findings with previous research, proposes a comprehensive account of managerial problem categories and sets directions for future research. |
