Abstract:After a decade of economic reform, this year may prove to be a turning point for Vietnam, as the country's leadership convenes for the Eighth Party Congress, surveys the last ten years of progress, and plots a course for the year 2000. Economic figures for 1995, and the first quarter of 1996, suggest that things are going well. According to official data, inflation has been kept in abeyance, and the dong has remained broadly stable against the US dollar. The economy grew by 9.5 % last year, states the author.
