Abstract:The popularity of management gurus is based on the need for managers to find quick and simple solutions for their problems and the gurus' adeptness with marketing to promote these solutions. The author describes the rhetorical techniques employed by the leaders of the reengineering movement, Hammer and Champy, to manipulate managers to launch a reengineering initiative within their organizations. The inherent dramatic appeal of the reengineering process is an important reason for the movement's popularity and, paradoxically, its lack of success.
