Abstract:EMU will chance the shape of banks' business: Traditional sources of income will be lost and new sources found; Corporates and correspondents will consolidate relationships right across Europe; Pan-European capabilities will become increasingly important. Most European banks have primarily a domestically-focused business and mindset. When the question is who will win and who will lose from market changes coming with EMU, the winners will have these main characteristics: Pan-European capabilities and mindset; approach EMU as a business opportunity, not just an IT cost; Investment banking capabilities to complement commercial banking skills. This profile fits better American banks than it does most European operations.
