Abstract: | Businesses developing high-complexity technologies have greater competency demands and higher organization costs than other businesses, and also higher risks of failure. Alliances moderate failure risks but fewer survival benefits for businesses commercializing less complex technologies. The results show that technological complexity is a significant influence on business failure. High- and medium- complexity technologies face higher risks of dissolution than low-complexity businesses. Complexity, rather than change or diversity may be the major technological challenge for businesses. Businesses should evaluate technological expansion with care. |
