Abstract:There has been a considerable amount of discussion on the pros and cons of bilateral and multilateral regimes. Since the 1960s, multilateral trade under the aegis of GATT has benefited the world economy in various ways. Free trade permits a free flow of capital and investment, and leads to price, factor cost and income equalization. The desire to generate growth and income in the world economy is thought to be a solution to world poverty. While multilateral trade negotiations took place in the Tokyo Round in the 1970s and the Uruguay Round in the 1980s, bilateral trade negotiations are are conducted more or less on a parallel basis.
