Abstract:In Vietnam less than 5% of the population has a bank account. The danger of the country becoming overbanked, the specter of bad loans and evidence of malpractice, has led some to predict an imminent crisis. Since the banking sector in Vietnam was reformed in 1990 it has blossomed beyond all recognition from the old mono-banking system of the 1980s. The first private joint stock bank was established in 1991 and foreign bank branches entered the market a year later.
