Abstract:"Become leaner and meaner!" "Do more with less!" "Cut out the fat!" These have been the common battle cries of corporate America for the last decade. Competitive pressures have forced many firms to reduce the size of their work forces as one method of cost control. The impact has been dramatic. More than three million individuals have been displaced since 1989. A downsizing round typically affects about 10% of a company's work force. Middle management, in the past, has been hit disproportionately hard.
