| Abstract: | There is a difference btw. the large number of theoretical papers on firm organization and the lack of quantitative empirical evidence. This paper develops new empirical methodology based on business history and previous theoretical works allowing to describe aspects of the organization of firms in quantitative terms. There is used a sample composed of 438 Italian metalworking plants. The dynamics of firm organization is also studied in the period 1975-1997. The results of the analysis show among other things that the choice of the organizational form crucially relies on the 'loss of control phenomenon'. |
