Abstract:This article looks at the development of the professions and professionalism within a broad historical sweep. Concentrating on the Anglo-American experience, it takes as its stage the whole of the twentieth century and its dramatis personae as key groups associated with the rise of the professions. It asks what relationships might be discerned between the professions and each of the following: managers, owners, and aristocracy.
