Abstract:Research on foreign entry modes is updated and extended in this study by examining impacts of knowledge transfer capacity and knowledge tacitness. On one hand, research has emphasized that deploying intangible knowledge-based assets is required for successful international expansion, and on the other hand, the role of tacitness in constraining a company's ability to transfer knowledge internationally has been addressed. These perspectives are combined to describe how knowledge tacitness affects the relative suitability of four archetypal entry modes: exporting, licensing, establishing an alliance and wholly owned entry. Then knowledge transfer capacity of a company is examined and conceptually developed.
